My husband and I started doing something different for gifts last year. We took $20 each and went to the store together. We split ways and shopped for each others gifts. All we could spend was the $20 so the expectations weren't super high, but we were able to get each other some little things that we wouldn't have purchased for ourselves.

Plus it was fun bumping into him at the store and trying to hide my purchases. LOL
