Go Ahead, Jump!
“Jump!” isn’t just a song by Van Halen from 1984. It’s also the key to proceeding in “The 80’s Game” sold by 80stees.com. This well-researched boardgame features thousands of trivia questions in the categories of sports, music, events, tv, and movies. I thought I was a trivia diva on the decade until I played “The 80’s Game”. If you enjoy “Trivial Pursuit” or “Cranium”, you’ll love “The 80’s Game” because it’s even more challenging.
The game contains:
• Game Board and instructions
• 2 boxes of trivia cards
• white standard number Die
• black die with the 6 categories
• 6 pawn pieces
The object of the game is to proceed your pawn through 10 circles that represent the years 1980-1989 by answering trivia questions by the roll of the die. First person to reach the center, wins. Sounds simple? It’s not that easy. Each circle contains landing spaces that represent each of the five categories, a landing space to roll again, and a jump space that brings you to the next chronological circle.
You roll the standard number die to move your pawn to a landing space. If you land on a category space, your opponent draws a trivia card, and reads a category question that corresponds with your landing space. If you get the answer correct, you roll again and continue playing until you get an answer incorrect. If your turn has you land on a jump space, you roll the black category die. You can possibly advance to the next circle that represents the following year in the 80’s. The trick is that you not only need to get the trivia card answer correct, you also need to answer whether it happened in the year your pawn is in or not, to be able to advance to the next year’s circle.
Here’s an example trivia card with questions in each category:
Questions-
Event: This toy company begins selling it’s My Little Pony line of dolls nationwide.
Sports: NY Islanders goaltender Billy Smith wins this trophy which is awarded to the Stanley Cup playoffs MVP.
Music: This group releases the songs “Body Language” and ” Calling All Girls.”
Movies: This movie premieres and contains the line, “The next screw
that falls out is gonna be you.”
TV: Before launching “The Hollywood Minute: in Saturday Night Live,
this actor plays “Kyle” in the newly released movie Police Academy 4.
Answers-
Event: Hasbro, 1982
Sports: Conn Smythe Trophy, 1983
Music: Queen, 1982
Movies: The Breakfast Club, 1985
TV: David Spade, 1987
After playing “The 80’s Game”, I found myself wondering if I would be better suited for “The 90’s Game” also sold by 80stees.com because I was a child in the 80’s. There are plenty of questions that I sincerely didn’t know at all, so it was a learning experience, but there were enough questions that I did know to keep me playing. Even if you get answers wrong, you’ll still have fun because it sparks conversations and brings back memories.
Don’t have 90 minutes to play? You can play with just the trivia cards. The trivia questions are addictive. I find myself reading through the cards just for fun. Aren’t savvy with sports or events questions? You can opt to move your pawn clockwise or counter-clockwise to avoid specific category questions. Point being that the game is versatile and you can create your own rules or follow the exact rules.
Remember the pop culture of the 80’s? How well do you remember it?
It’s like gnarly fer shure. Totally awesome to the max! Way Trippendicular!
Get it and Jump. Jump! Go ahead and Jump!

Wow. I thought I was knowledgeable about the 80s, but after seeing those questions, I’m not so sure. I was in my teens and early 20s in the 80s. This game sounds fun. Would be interesting to have it for our family vacation this summer.

I have this game, and you’re right, it is hard! Either it has very obscure info, or I wasn’t as eighties savvy in the eighties as I thought. lol (and I graduated in ‘83!)
